Summer is officially underway, and with longer days and warmer temperatures, it’s the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the Appomattox River Trail. National Hydration Day, observed each year on June 23, serves as an important reminder that staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to stay healthy and safe while spending time outdoors.
Whether you’re walking, biking, paddling, fishing, or volunteering along the river, your body depends on water to regulate temperature, support muscle function, and maintain energy levels. Even mild dehydration can leave you feeling tired, dizzy, or less able to enjoy your outdoor adventures.
As temperatures rise across Virginia, planning ahead is essential. Bring a reusable water bottle, take regular water breaks, and pay attention to signs of heat-related illness. If you’re heading out for a longer excursion, consider carrying extra water and choosing shaded sections of the trail during the hottest parts of the day.
National Hydration Day is also a great opportunity to think about the connection between clean water and healthy communities. The Appomattox River is a valuable natural resource that supports recreation, wildlife habitat, and the quality of life for residents throughout the region. Protecting local waterways helps ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the benefits they provide.
At FOLAR, we’re committed to promoting stewardship of the Appomattox River while encouraging people to get outside and experience all it has to offer. This National Hydration Day, grab your water bottle, invite a friend, and explore a section of the Appomattox River Trail.
Stay hydrated, stay safe, and enjoy the outdoors!
